High Scores

This is my personal high scores page.  Links have been provided to any associated content on my YouTube channel.

Almost all of these scores have been officially verified by Twin Galaxies (think Guinness World Records for video games).  World record scores are marked with a "WR".  Scores that are marked as "unofficial" are unverified personal accomplishments.

For speed runs, I have chosen to factor in the times posted on Speed Demos Archive (SDA) as well as Twin Galaxies.  I have a great deal of respect for the gamers on SDA, so I only count my speed runs as world records when my time is the fastest among both websites.

World record or not, official or unofficial, I assure you that all of these scores are 100% real, without the use of cheat devices of any kind (codes, game genies, emulators, or save states).

Many of these scores are quite beatable.  If you read anything on this list that makes you think to yourself "I can do better", I would highly encourage you to do so and submit your achievements to Twin Galaxies, SDA, or your favorite gaming website.  We need more players in the humble community of competitive gamers!  If what you see here gets you fired up enough to join our ranks and start competing, then this page has done its job. :)

That said, have a look at these scores and see what you think.  If you would like me to share tips about any specific games on this blog, let me know and I will see what I can come up with.

Cheers!
Tom

ARCADE

I don't play a lot of arcade games, but these scores are among my finest achievements.  The Mario Bros. score broke a record that had stood since 1985!  Moon Patrol is no slouch either, because only a select few people have ever passed a million points.

Mario Bros. - 4,678,440 (older video)
Mario Bros. - No POW Challenge - 1,830,170
Moon Patrol - 1,414,660 (WR)

ARCADE VIA CONSOLE

These are scores for arcade games that were performed using compilation discs on modern consoles.  The games on these discs are the actual roms from arcade machines, but they fall into a different category due to hardware differences that produce slightly different gameplay from the arcade (just like with MAME).

I really wish I could find a Yie Ar Kung-Fu machine in an arcade somewhere.  It was one of my first favorites as a kid.  I haven't seen it in ages though.

Klax - 1,633,854 (PS2 - Midway Arcade Treasures)
Moon Patrol - 723,210 (PS1 - Arcade's Greatest Hits, The Midway Collection 2) (WR)
Yie Ar Kung-Fu - 9,999,990 (PS1 - Konami Arcade Classics) (WR)

ATARI 800

This was my favorite system before I got my NES.  I still play it from time to time, but my computer is unfortunately starting to show its age.

Jumpman is one of my all-time favorites.  I highly recommend playing it at least once in your lifetime.  :)

Caverns of Khafka - 15,002,213 (WR)
Forbidden Forest - 144,000 (WR)
Frogger 2 - 93,778 (WR)
Jumpman - Grand Loop Mode (All 30 Levels) - 79,025 (WR)
Jumpman - Beginner Mode (Levels 1-8) - 20,975 (WR)
Jumpman - Intermediate Mode (Levels 9-18) - 25,300 (WR)
Jumpman - Advanced Mode (Levels 19-30) - 32,700 (WR)

Jumpman Junior - 1,011,725 (unofficial)
Panther - 186,080 (unofficial)
Pathfinder - 24,398,461 (WR)
Tail of Beta Lyrae - 334,539 (WR)

COMMODORE 64

True story: I never owned a Commodore computer until the year 2002.  I actually won it by playing in a Centipede contest at a seminar for my job. :)  Never really got into it though.

Forbidden Forest is a far more enjoyable game on the Commodore than on Atari.  It has more variety and much better graphics.  Not sure why the programmer left some enemies out of the Atari version, but it's a shame.

Forbidden Forest - 901,851 (WR)

NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM (NES)

Easily my favorite system, as if the large number of scores didn't make that obvious. :)  No matter what other games and systems come out, I always find myself coming back to what I feel is the best selection of pure gameplay ever created.

A lot of runs in this list were special to me, but probably the best one was when I finally reached that kill screen on NES Donkey Kong.  I went through years of frustration trying to pull that off!  (8 years off and on)

Honorable mention goes to TMNT 3.  Very few people have completed that game without losing a life.

SUPER NINTENDO (SNES)

For some reason, the Super Nintendo didn't catch on for me.  The only games I tended to play were sequels to my favorite NES games. :)

My best run here is Zombies Ate My Neighbors.  It's nearly impossible to rescue every possible victim in this game for the 100% run.  Over the course of 55 levels, something random almost always kills at least one of them.

Arkanoid: Doh It Again - 3,623,230 (WR)
Donkey Kong Country - Speed Run (With Saves) - 47:00
Gradius 3 - 2,121,400
Road Runner's Death Valley Rally - Speed Run - 25:56 (WR)

Super Punch-Out!! - Special Circuit - 661,480 (WR)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors - Speed Run (100%) - 2:17:16 (WR-SDA)

SEGA GENESIS

I'm not very competitive on Sega games, but I really enjoyed playing Sol-Deace.  That shooter was a real challenge and an even tougher record to break.  The previous record holder set the bar really high, so I ended up beating the record by only a few thousand points!

Sol-Deace - 756,555 (WR)
Super Hang-On - 40,919,500 (WR)

NINTENDO GAME BOY

Not much here, but I may try to add to this list in the future.

I really like the Game Boy version of Elevator Action.  The arcade version was nice, but this one has attack dogs and robots! :)

Elevator Action - 999,990 (WR)

NINTENDO 64 (N64)

While I enjoy playing 3D games, I tend to avoid them in competition.  The one score you see for this system will probably by my last.

Donkey Kong 64 is one of my most complicated tactical achievements.  Among other things, you need 100 golden bananas to beat the game.  There are 200 golden bananas available, so you have to figure out which 100 of those will produce the fastest path through the game.  That was a project that took several months of planning.

Donkey Kong 64 - Speed Run (No Major Glitches) - 4:26:00 (WR)

NINTENDO GAME CUBE

Don't let the kiddie title fool you.  That Looney Tunes mini-game is no joke!

Looney Tunes Traffic Attack is actually a favorite among Twin Galaxies players.  We used to play that game for several hours at parties.  Most people scored in the 300-320 range, but after that the game becomes insanely fast!

Looney Tunes: Back in Action - Traffic Attack Mini-Game - 361 (WR)

XBOX LIVE ARCADE

I only recently bought an XBox 360, so nothing to write home about.  Still, I recommend The Impossible Game, if you haven't played it.  Simple, great soundtrack, tough as nails, but not impossible.

The Impossible Game - Completed All Levels (unofficial)
